Staff Lawyer

Together Against Poverty Society (TAPS) is hiring a staff lawyer to complement our established legal advocacy programs. This is a full-time (5 days a week) permanent position which includes extended health benefits and payment of all relevant Law Society insurance and practice fees. Start date is negotiable, but our preference is for the successful candidate to be available in September, 2018. 

Primary Job Responsibilities

Practice as a lawyer in the field of poverty law, by: 

  1. providing legal information, summary advice, and representation to clients in the areas of Residential Tenancy, Income Assistance and Disability, and Employment Standards; 
  2. engaging in negotiations and mediations on administrative law matters; 
  3. representing clients in judicial reviews and other administrative appeals; 
  4. representing clients in various civil, human rights, and bylaw matters as they arise; 
  5. providing public legal education presentations to community organizations concerning legal rights, responsibilities and entitlements;
  6. preparing activity reports to the funders of this position and TAPS Executive Director;
  7. working from an anti-oppressive practice perspective with individuals who are experiencing a high level of challenges. 

Applicants Must:

  • Be a practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia. 
  • Have at least two years of previous experience practicing as a lawyer, policy reform experience, and a demonstrated interest in poverty law.
  • Be able to demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills and the ability to work with other advocates and poverty lawyers across British Columbia to identify systemic barriers affecting low-income people. 

Applicants Should Have: 

  • Knowledge and experience practicing administrative law. 
  • Strong communications skills, and be comfortable speaking to media and the public about poverty law issues. Candidates must also be able to write persuasive testimony and articles for newsletters and our website.
  • Strong computer literacy. 
  • The ability to confidently research and write policy briefs, concise fact sheets, and summaries for different audiences.
  • The ability to enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.  

Salary range for position will be from $65,000 – $85,000, dependent on the level of call or comparable experience of the successful candidate.
