Front Desk Volunteer
TAPS has two different volunteer opportunities to support our busy front desk.
Front Desk Reception Volunteers are responsible for answering the phone, taking messages for staff, and welcoming clients who visit our office. They help assess the needs of clients contacting TAPS to determine whether their issue falls within the scope of our services, assign incoming clients to the appropriate program/staff person, and/or provide community referrals. This is a challenging and engaging role, one that is vitally important to the day-to-day functioning of TAPS.
Time commitment: 3-6 hours of training and then one 3.5 hour shift per week.
Front Desk Support Volunteers assist the Front Desk Reception Volunteers. They may help out with photocopying documents, assisting visitors with filling out tax forms, call-backs, and other miscellaneous office tasks. The scheduling and time commitment for this role are much more flexible than the Front Desk Reception Volunteer role.
Time commitment: 3-6 hours of training and a flexible commitment week-to-week.
All Front Desk Volunteers Must:
Be at least 18 years of age;
Live in the Greater Victoria region;
Submit to a Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector search;
Have aptitude in verbal and written English;
Have a non-judgemental, compassionate attitude;
Be comfortable using a computer;
Be comfortable working directly with individuals in stressful situations experiencing complex issues related to poverty.
Scheduling and commitment: Front Desk Volunteer shifts take place on weekdays during TAPS business hours, either in the morning (8:45am-12:15pm) or in the afternoon (12:45pm-4:15pm). We do not have a strict minimum time commitment, but ideally volunteers in the Reception role will be able to commit to at least 6 months of volunteering, or at least 3 months for volunteers in the Support role.
