Job Description (Nature of the Position)

The primary job responsibilities for this position are as follows:

1.       Manage volunteer enrollment in the TAPS Volunteer Tax Program, which is a registered CVITP Program with the Canada Revenue Agency;

2.       Coordinate and schedule existing tax volunteers to receive and file income tax returns for our clients;

3.       When required, assist the volunteers by filing tax returns for our clients;

4.      Coordinate outreach programs for the Volunteer Tax Program, including off-site clinics and public education on tax filing;

6.       Assist in the hiring, training, and oversight of a Tax Practicum Student during the busy season;

7.       On occasion draft literary pieces for our newsletter Taproot and our website;

8.       Help maintain records and statistics for reporting to funders about the program; and,

9.       Assist the rest of staff with the general duties of the office, which are shared by all staff (for example: kitchen cleanliness, front desk cover, TAPS fundraising events).

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Education, and Skills

To be qualified for the position all applicants must:

4.      Be a good communicator who is able to accommodate and work effectively with people with disabilities, and comfortable communicating with multiple clients over the course of a work day.

Hours of Work and Compensation

This position is full-time (5 days/week or 35 hours/week). TAPS staff are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 374, and this position is covered by the TAPS Collective Agreement.

This position pays $33/hr ($60,060 annual), with a three-month probationary period. A regular shift at TAPS is a 7-hour work day with an unpaid 1-hr lunch and paid breaks. TAPS is open from 9-4, and closed from 12-1 for lunch. Start and end time of the work day are flexible as long as the open office hours are covered.

While this is the standard work shift at TAPS, the Tax Coordinator position is unique in that it experiences a busy period during the tax filing season (February to May) and quieter months in the off season (June to January). Because of this a modified work year is available, where the Tax Coordinator agrees to work extended hours during the busy season in exchange for an extended period of time off in the late summer/early fall when the program closes. We invite candidates to enquire about a modified schedule if interested.

Benefits

Full-time staff are given 15 paid sick days and 20 paid vacation days annually, in addition to a 4-day paid winter holiday closure. Staff qualify for extended health benefits after three months of employment, and an RRSP matching program of up to 4% of wages following one year of employment.
