Nanaimo Holiday Ask 2024

Together Against Poverty Society (TAPS) has opened an office in Nanaimo! TAPS is a non-profit legal education and advocacy organization driven to support and provide services to individuals in the areas of income assistance, disability, and residential tenancy. Founded in Victoria, where we have been operating for over 30 years, we recently started our second office to serve clients in the Greater Nanaimo area, and we could use your help getting started.

Organizations such as ours can only continue to offer services through the kindness and generosity from donors. You have the power to make a positive impact in the lives of those facing income insecurity and housing crises. We believe that everyone should have sufficient income and security to live with dignity and meet their needs. Our work serves to enhance the quality of life of those living in poverty and hold government agencies accountable for the economic and social injustice in the community.

One of the pillars of our organization, and of the Nanaimo non-profit community, is Legal Advocate Don McConnell, whose dedication to legal advocacy in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith area has spanned almost 30 years. Don has been a poverty law advocate for organizations such as Nanaimo Citizen’s Advocacy and SEIA, and has now joined us at TAPS to run our disability advocacy program.

Don has personally observed the growing impacts of the housing crisis on poverty in our community, and has seen over the years how government systems designed to alleviate poverty have become less personal and harder to access than ever before. Your donation will directly support our local efforts to provide legal assistance and ensure that our advocates, like Don, can continue their lifechanging work.

And this year, thanks to the generosity of a committed benefactor and long-time supporter of TAPS, Andrew Beckerman, all donations received this holiday season up to a total of $7,500 will be matched. This means your donation will effectively be doubled.

We know we have a long way to go in getting established in Nanaimo, and we hope you will consider supporting us as we take the next step in that journey. To make a donation, click

“TAPS provides critically important services for our community. To support TAPS’ essential work, I have offered to match donations that TAPS receives this holiday season. I hope you will join me in supporting TAPS today so that we can double the impact of our donation dollars.”
